Missouri House of Representatives District 19 includes Kansas City’s Northeast and West Side. Candidates for the 2024 primary include Patricia Hernandez, Wick Thomas and Karen Spalding.

Patricia Ann Geronima Hernandez

Patricia Hernandez is a member of the Jackson County Democrats and previously served as president of the Indian Mound Neighborhood Association. A Kansas City native, Hernandez works as an administrative coordinator at the Greater Kansas City Coalition to End Homelessness.

Hernandez plans to focus on policies that empower vulnerable communities, invest in affordable housing and support resources for people experiencing homelessness, according to her campaign site. In an interview with Kansas City Hispanic News, Hernandez said she opposes Missouri’s abortion ban and wants gun buyers to undergo background checks. Hernandez has been going to the statehouse with term-limited representative Ingrid Burnett and said they have worked together for seven years. Hernandez’s largest donor from January to April 2024 was a Kansas City accountant.

A Northeast resident, Wick Thomas works as a community college librarian. In the last two elections, Thomas ran for the same Missouri House seat against the now term-limited incumbent Ingrid Burnett. The lifelong Missourian said they held their first protest at age 16, according to a 2020 Pitch article.

Thomas collected signatures for the Missouri abortion rights ballot initiative, according to their Instagram. Gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action endorsed Thomas. Their website specifically mentions the decades-old Missouri Non-Discrimination Act, which would add sexual orientation and gender to identities protected under the state human rights act. Thomas’ largest donors include a local scientist, accountant and teacher and New York-based author Brian Selznick.

When constituents disagree with her personal beliefs, Spalding said she would follow the majority’s view.
