MLB All-Star Game results: Shohei Ohtani picks up win as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. helps power AL over NL | Sporting News (2024)

In what has been a microcosm of the 2021 MLB season to date, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Shohei Ohtani were the story of the 2021 MLB All-Star Game.

A night after swinging in the Home Run Derby, Ohtani spun a shutout inningto start off the game for the American League, and in the third inning, Guerrero hit a tape-measure blast — measured at 468 feet — for hisfirst of two RBIs on the night. By the end of the evening, Ohtanihad earned the win in a5-2 victory against the National Leaguewhile Guerrero was named the game's MVP. Guerrero became the youngest player to win the award in the game's history.

The scoring got started in the second on an RBI groundout from another Blue Jay, second baseman Marcus Semien, who gave the AL the lead. The AL added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Guerrero and an RBI single from Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts. The two catchers on either side exchanged runs over the next two half-innings, with the Phillies' J.T. Realmuto homering in the bottom of the fifth to put the NL on the board, but Tampa Bay's Mike Zunino bringing the run back with a homer in the sixth. The National League added just one more run on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth.

Tuesday marked the eighth All-Star win in a row for the American League, the second-longest streak in the history of the event. The National League holds the record for the longest win streak (11 straight victories from 1972-1982).
